Blush Oranges (also known as ‘Blood Oranges’) are oozing in intense
tangy-sweetness, three of the following varieties ‘Moro’, ‘Tarocco’ and
‘Sanguinello’ sport a deep red/ maroon colour with streaks whilst the ‘Cara Cara
navel’ offer a lighter pink/red blush. All varieties are not only distinctively
fragrant but also have a unique flavour and are incredibly juicy. They are
extremely versatile and can be used as part of a sticky sauce for a warming
winter main course, a substitute for citrus deserts or simply as a garnish for
the perfect cocktail. They appear to have originated in the southern
Mediterranean where they have been grown since the 18th century. Only developing
when temperatures are low at night as during the Mediterranean fall/ winter they
thrive on mineral rich volcanic soil. Seasonality can vary due to Variety: Moro,
Tarocco and Sanguinello varieties are available from Dec - May. The Cara Cara
Navel variety are available from June to August *The above is for guidance only
