Thanks to well-established management and strong cooperation between fishing authorities and scientists, cod stocks in this region have remained healthy. Cod are usually found at depths less than 200m and typically caught with demersal trawls or longlines in the temperate waters of the North East Atlantic. Regulations that apply to all North East Atlantic cod fisheries include minimum catch size, minimum mesh sizes and the mandatory use of sorting grid in trawl fisheries to enable undersized fish to escape. A number of cod fisheries are also engaged in researching and mapping vulnerable marine habitats, some of which have since been closed to fishing to ensure they remain protected.
